Beverage Review:
 Bulldog Root Beer is the final result of two years of trial and error and nine test batches that did not meet approval. It is brewed in order to more closely resemble early root beers, which had a more earthy and bitter taste. They also use high quality ingredients, like cane sugar.
The company has set out to re-create an authentic root beer, taken from the stories of settlers who made their root beer from roots, spices, and barks they found in the new world. Small amount of yeast were added for carbonation, and these early root beers also had small traces of alcohol…although not enough to become intoxicated.
“Root Beer” was born because researchers of the day (6000 years ago!) discovered that the poor lived shorter lives than rich. The difference was attributed to the fact that wealthy families drank beer, and poor families drank water. There is relevance to this theory, as sanitation was not up to par in those days, so water supplies quickly became contaminated. Beer, on the other hand, was brewed and heated to high temperatures that killed any bacteria.
Bulldog Root Beer brews its soft drink to give it a more “old world” taste. They are not alcoholic, however, and the cane sugar takes away the bitter taste associated with authentic classic root beer.
Their label features real bull dogs who are aptly named Barley and Hops. They live in Fresno CA, and have long been the company mascots.
